Sunday, October 14th 2007, 4:00 AM

Taking your wedding on the road may seem like a daunting task – too expensive, too complicated, too exhausting. You may think the sunny shores of a tropical island or the breathtaking top of a mountain are just not in the cards for your wedding. But Anja Winikka, an editor at The Knot magazine, has some good news for all you Big Day big dreamers.

“Destination weddings can be as big or as over the top as you want them to be, just like here at home,” says Winikka. “A wedding away could be perfect for a couple wanting to return to a special vacation spot, for gathering a scattered family, or just a vacation for everyone.”

Of course, planning your nuptial escape may seem daunting. Thankfully, there’s “The Knot Guide to Destination Weddings,” a virtual wedding planner in a book. Got questions? The Knot tome has all the answers when it comes to getting hitched away from home.

Yikes, don’t let this happen to you!

Booking the trip of a lifetime for wrong year

Beverly Walker of Reno made the kind of mistake that could happen to anyone.

She and her husband, Jim, decided to take trip of lifetime to Kauai in November for their 40th wedding anniversary.

“It would be our first time in Hawaii and like our honeymoon, since we never got one in 1967,” Beverly said.

So last year on Oct. 10, 2006, after “scrimping and saving,” Beverley booked the trip on Travelocity.com.

She charged $4,751 for the flight, four star hotel and rental car.

She figured booking a trip that far in advance would give the couple a year to be excited.

Beverly is training services specialist for the Washoe County Sheriff’s office, so she’s used to booking lots of training programs for law enforcement.

She chatted up the trip with family and friends and envisioned a perfect vacation at the Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort & Spa.

She would look at the itinerary a lot, she kept one in a kitchen drawer and one at work, and get excited.

Last week, Beverly decided to book a bus tour of the island.

“Imagine my surprise when the days and dates for 2007 didn’t line up correctly on my itinerary,” Beverly said.

“November 30, the day we were leaving, was a Thursday on my itinerary, but November 30 is a Friday.”

USA TODAY Article… Far from paradise: Tales of honeymoon mishaps ahead

I just found a pretty interesting article in the USA Today about… Tales of honeymoon mishaps ahead

The quintessential honeymoon gone haywire has to be the one in the 1972 movie The Heartbreak Kid, in which a bridegroom (Charles Grodin) falls for a bombshell (Cybill Shepherd) while his bride is room-bound with a sunburn. The remake, starring Ben Stiller, opens today. But what about real-life horror honeymoons? USA TODAY asked readers to point the way to their post-wedding travel woes.

Termite crossing

On the way to Kauai (Hawaii), I developed a dragging, loud cough. We stayed in a bed & breakfast near Poipu Beach. It was someone’s home, and you stayed in the only other bedroom in the house. Each day and night, I would have huge coughing attacks.

One night we were watching TV, and I was really coughing. All of a sudden, my wife screamed, “Your back!” It was covered with bugs!

The homeowners came back home, and I told them that they had a bug problem, and we were getting out of the house. The wife turned to me and said, “Were they little red ones?” I replied, “Yes.” She said, “Don’t worry. Those are termites. I killed a few hundred the other day!”

We departed the next day to Maui.
